THE
MOTHER
CULTURE
SERIES
Three gatherings for mothers —
Nature journaling, watercolor,
and the quiet practice of
paying attention again.
What is Mother Culture?
Here’s something Charlotte Mason believed deeply:
Mothers are people too.
Not just caregivers. Not just the ones who hold everything together.
People — with minds that need feeding, spirits that need tending, and a real capacity to be shaped by the beautiful things of the world.
She called this Mother Culture. And it’s simpler than it sounds.
It might look like engaging with beautiful ideas — not because it’s useful, but because we ought to. It might look like learning something new, pursuing something you enjoy, or spending time outside with your eyes open and nowhere to be.
The common thread isn’t what you’re doing.
It’s the posture you bring to it — receptive, unhurried, willing to notice.
Mother Culture isn’t about adding more to your plate or becoming a more impressive version of yourself. It’s about giving your attention to the world around you.
A poem. A walk.
A plant you’ve passed a hundred times and never really seen.
A quiet hour with a sketchbook and a cup of tea.
Mothers who practice this don’t just benefit themselves.
They bring something alive back to their families — curiosity, depth, and a sense that the world is worth paying attention to.
Charlotte Mason believed this was worth protecting. So do I.
Three Gatherings
You can join any one of these gatherings, or come to all three if you’d like to settle into the rhythm.
At my home
Friday, May 22nd
6:30–8:00 PM
We’ll gather around the table with tea and explore a few quiet acres of land.
We’ll begin simply — slowing down, learning how to look before we draw, and letting something small take shape on the page.
We’ll also cover the basics of watercolor — simple techniques to help you feel more confident putting color on the page.
No pressure to get it right. Just a place to start.
at the greenhouse
Sunday, May 31st
12:30–3:00 PM
We’ll meet in a local greenhouse — warm, green, and full of things worth paying attention to.
This session gives you time to work with watercolor in a relaxed setting.
We’ll practice simple color mixing, layering, and how to stay with a subject long enough to really see it.
There will be space to sit and work, and space to wander and find what catches your attention.
IN THE FIELD
Monday, June 2nd
6:30–8:00 PM
We’ll take everything outside on a short hike together and stop along the way to journal.
Early June in Wisconsin is full and alive, and this session is about spending time with it — choosing something that catches your attention and following it on the page.
You’ll work at your own pace, with guidance available if you want it.
We’ll close the evening together with a short time to share, if you’d like.
